Problem connecting to Canoscan 9950F

I have a Canoscan 9950F scanner (connected to my iMac via USB) that I haven't used since before I installed the first version of El Capitan. I now have v10.11.6 installed. After installing the latest Canoscan driver (Ver.16.1.0a) I can see the scanner listed under USB devices in the System Report but not under Printers and Scanners in System Preferences and no way to add it. My Samsung multifunction printer and Canon colour printer (both using wireless connection) are listed and working perfectly. I've tried to connect to it using various scanning programs (e.g. Image Capture, Vuescan among others) but they either don't recognise it at all or recognise its existence but say it's not connected. I desperately want to scan some old negatives, slides and photographs (well beyond the capability of the Samsung). It worked perfectly with previous systems. Any suggestions?

According to http://support-ph.canon-asia.com/contents/PH/EN/0100436802.html, the Canoscan driver version I downloaded is for the following:

  • macOS v10.12
  • OS X v10.11
  • OS X v10.10
  • OS X v10.9
  • Mac OS X v10.8
  • Mac OS X v10.7
  • Mac OS X v10.6
  • Mac OS X v10.5

It's listed as 9000F Scanner Driver Ver.16.1.0a (Mac)

Last Updated : 16-Sep-2016
Issue Number : 0100436802

I couldn't find this driver on any of the other Canon support sites, only the older versions. Perhaps I need to ask them why they're publishing misleading information?

Thanks, you may well be right - I was labouring under the impression that the driver was for the 9000F series, therefore including the 9950F. No longer sure whether I got the idea from the Apple print and scan driver site, Canon, my numerous searches of various forums and help pages, or my usually reliable tame mac expert (who I may throttle if it was him).

Now I'm looking for an alternative solution before I resort to firing up the old imac and using that. Any suggestions for alternative routes?

This may or may not be useful to anyone with a similar problem. I sudenly recalled seeing somewhere a note to the effect that users of the latest versions of El Capitan should download the 32-bit version of Vuescan, not the 64-bit (couldn't find the reference again). However, the link to the latest version of Vuescan automatically downloads the 62-bit version (no choice). Finally, I tried the 'older versions' link below the new download link and there it was, top of the list! The scanner still isn't listed in the System Preferences, and so far we haven't succeeded in making accessible to the second iMac on the network without physically reconnecting it, but it finally works!

Now, can anyone suggest a way I can regain the attention of a partner who's happily working his way through 20 years' of forgotten negatives?
